Seattle, Washington / 3 AUG 2020 / Seattle City Council Prepares to Abolish Police Force

SITREP: Seattle City Council is drafting a resolution to transfer the City of Seattle Police Department’s functions to other existing departments and create a civilian led Department of Community Safety & Violence Prevention. The draft resolution states that the Seattle City Council intends to consider legislation to implement these changes by the end of November 2020.

RECOMMENDATION: Additional protests are to be expected in the greater Seattle area if the Mayor or City Council does not fully support proposals to defund the police. It is not clear how many of the Council Members will support this more radical proposal, but the Mayor is unlikely to support the resolution in its current form.
